Rekeying Rekeying is the process that a locksmith goes through in order to change a keys ability to open a lock. The process is an attractive option for those who may need to maintenance their locks or locking systems. Simply put, the tumblers or key pins can be changed inside a lock so the entire lock does not have to be. With the cost or brand new locks, replacing components is always attractive. These tumblers (key pins), contained within the lock housing, control the key's ability to turn the tumbler and open the lock. The correct pattern is "cut" into the "working key" to open the lock. While Re-keying can take a little longer, it can be more cost effective than lock replacement. The locksmith simply changes the key - pin or tumbler combinations inside the lock. The key consideration would have to be the condition of your current locks. Obviously, if the tumblers or pins are in such conditions that they need to be replaced (pins or tumblers or badley damaged or worn), replacement would be the only option. To this effect a regular inspection of locks should be conducted. Thinking about one or two locks might not be to bad but, if you have a commercial building or have to maintain many locks on a larger scale, this might be something to consider. It is similar in the auto industry, where it is simply cheaper to repair than replace. The Cost can add up over larger scales or where more locks are necessary.
